How to Test AI-Generated Video

You have already seen the pitch: add video to a product page and conversions will rise. There is usually a percentage attached.

Ignore it. Trace the number back and you usually land on a vendor blog citing another vendor blog, which cites a case study from a store that sells something else at a different price to different traffic. That is not evidence about your store.

What has changed is the cost of finding out for yourself. An AI-generated product video can now be made from the photographs you already have. That puts a proper product page video test within reach of a small ecommerce team. Here is how to run one without talking yourself into a false win.

What the tools give you now

The model drawing attention is Seedance 2.5, which ByteDance showed at its Volcano Engine FORCE conference on June 23, 2026. It is still an enterprise beta, not a generally available product. Browser tools branded around Seedance 2.5 currently provide access to the shipping Seedance 2.0 family while the newer model remains listed as coming soon.

For ecommerce, the announced 2.5 beta is interesting for two reasons: a 30-second single-shot window and a reported ceiling of 50 reference inputs. The second figure comes from launch coverage rather than a public specification sheet, so treat it as a claim for now. The available Seedance 2.0 model already accepts text, images, video and audio in the same request, generates sound with the picture and supports clips up to 15 seconds.

References are what separate a clip that shows a product like yours from one that has a chance of showing your actual item. If you have eight photographs from the last shoot, a packaging shot and a brand color reference, supply them at the start. Fewer details are then left for the model to invent.

Seedance 2.0 supports up to nine images, three video clips and three audio clips alongside the written instruction. That is enough material for a useful Seedance 2.0 product video test, even if the 15-second limit calls for a tighter idea than the announced 2.5 beta would allow.

Launch coverage also repeated a claim of roughly 20 percent better prompt adherence. There is no public benchmark behind that number yet. Your discarded render count will tell you more about the cost of the tool than the keynote figure will.

Four placements, ranked by how cleanly you can test them

Not every spot on your store gives you a clean read. Start where the signal is strongest.

Paid ad creative

This is the cleanest test. Keep the audience, budget and landing page fixed, and change the creative. The ad platform handles the split, and the result arrives faster than it will on a low-traffic product page. If you run only one test, start here.

Product page hero or gallery slot

Visitors have high intent and make a decision on the page. Track add-to-cart rate as the primary metric. Final conversion is farther away, and checkout abandonment introduces causes that have nothing to do with your Shopify product page video.

Collection page or homepage banner

The signal is weaker because the visitor is several steps from a purchase. Attributing a conversion change to the banner takes more traffic than many stores have.

Email and thumbnails

These placements are easy to test, but the result is about clicks rather than purchases. Record it as a click-through finding and stop there.

The method that produces a usable answer

1. Pick one placement and one product

Testing ecommerce video across the whole catalog tells you little, because the effect of the video gets mixed up with differences between products. Choose one item with enough traffic to move the metric.

2. Change exactly one thing

The control is your current page. The variant is your current page plus the video. Not a redesigned page, not new copy, not a repositioned buy button. One change, or the result is uninterpretable.

3. Decide your metric before you look

Write it down first: add-to-cart rate on this product page, or cost per acquisition on this ad set. Choosing your metric after seeing the data is how everybody talks themselves into a result that is not there.

4. Run it to a decision, not to a date

Ending a test on Friday because it is Friday is the most common way store owners get fooled. Small differences need more data than large ones, and if your store takes a handful of orders a day, a modest improvement will take longer to establish than your patience allows. If the honest answer is that you cannot detect a difference that small, that is itself a finding: the placement does not matter enough to keep spending on.

5. Do not peek and stop early

Checking daily and stopping the moment the variant is ahead guarantees you will find winners that are noise. Set the duration, then leave it alone.

6. Expect a novelty effect

New elements on a familiar store often perform well for a week for reasons that have nothing to do with the element. If you can, look at whether the difference holds in the second half of the test window.

7. Test the second video before concluding anything about video

If the clip loses, that may mean video does not help on that page, or it may mean your clip was bad. Those are different findings. One more render is cheap, and it distinguishes them.

The cost math, stated plainly

Credits are consumed when a render runs. Free allocations are useful for learning how a model reads a brief, but rarely cover a polished campaign with multiple variants.

One-off packs start at $12.99 for 160 credits, described by the provider as roughly eight five-second clips at 480p, valid for 45 days from purchase. Monthly plans start at $29.99 for 550 credits, around 27 of those short clips. Subscription credits last 30 days from each grant, credits from signup or daily check-ins expire in seven days, and credits refunded after a failed render do not expire.

The same discipline keeps the test affordable. Prove the composition in short, low-resolution renders, where a framing mistake costs less. Change one thing per attempt and buy the full-resolution render only after the shot is settled.

Most stores can do this manually. A larger catalog may need to create variants from product data or queue renders from an internal tool. In that case, compare the browser workflow with an AI video generation API before building the test. Programmatic access saves repetitive setup, but it does not fix a weak brief or a badly chosen metric.

What generated video must never do on a store

This is a business risk, not a style preference.

Do not generate footage that shows your product doing something it does not do. Do not generate a scale, a texture, a color or a finish that differs from what ships. Do not generate a person using the product in a way that implies a result you cannot support.

The cost of getting this wrong does not appear in your conversion rate. It appears in returns, in chargebacks, in the review that says the item looked nothing like the video, and potentially in a consumer-protection complaint. A misleading ad that converts well is the most expensive kind of winning test.

Also check the frame for text. Anything resembling lettering comes back with characters that are nearly right, and nearly right is worse than obviously wrong when it is your brand name. Set every word on screen yourself, afterwards, in a real design tool.

The decision you are trying to make

The useful answer is not "video converts." It is narrower: this clip, in this position, improved or failed to improve a metric you chose before the test. That is enough to decide whether to make a second product video. It is also enough to stop spending when the page performs the same without one.
