Shopify Canvas Explained: Sidekick, Limits, and What It Means for Your Theme

Shopify Canvas explained as an isometric design workspace where an AI agent edits store pages in Debutify purple

Shopify Canvas is the design surface Shopify launched on October 1, 2026, where merchants build their online store together with Sidekick, the company's AI agent, according to Shopify's announcement (shopify.com). It shows every page of a store in one workspace and renders the real theme code instead of a static preview.

One catch matters most to theme buyers. At launch, Shopify Canvas opens only themes that Shopify builds itself, plus custom themes. We make Shopify themes and we run our own agentic AI store builder, so we follow this category closely. Here is what the new surface does, and what it cannot do.

What is Shopify Canvas?

Shopify's newsroom defines Canvas as a new design surface where merchants build with Sidekick, Shopify's AI agent. It began rolling out to stores over the days after October 1, 2026. Merchants open it from the Themes page in the admin, on desktop devices only.

The company positions the surface alongside the existing theme editor rather than above it. In the launch coverage, Ben Sehl, Shopify's Director of Product, said the team is early and that Canvas is not replacing the existing editor yet, per the October 5, 2026 guide by PageFly (pagefly.io, checked October 22, 2026).

How Shopify Canvas and Sidekick work together

The workspace lays every page out together. You pan across the store to judge the whole design, zoom in for details, click any element to edit it directly, or describe the change to Sidekick in chat. Everything happens inside one view.

According to Shopify's announcement, the agent's changes land in Canvas in real time. The surface renders the real code behind the store rather than a mockup, so you can test full interactivity, animation, and every screen size, with real products and collections in the layout, as you work.

Sidekick behaves like a collaborator rather than a command line. It asks questions, proposes approaches, remembers your preferences, and carries earlier design decisions into later work. Shopify also simplified its theme architecture so the agent can understand and change store structure more cleanly.

The scale behind the launch is striking. Sidekick had already made more than 25 million edits to themes in the first half of 2026, according to Shopify's figures. Sehl told the press that merchants can build a fully customized store in around twenty minutes with Canvas.

TechCrunch reported one more detail: Sidekick takes screenshots of the work, so the agent sees what the merchant sees (techcrunch.com, checked October 22, 2026).

What Shopify Canvas cannot do yet

The launch limits matter more than the demo for most stores. Here is the list as documented in the announcement coverage and Shopify's requirements page.

LimitWhat it means at launch
Desktop only.No editing from a phone or a tablet.
No outside themes.Only Shopify-built designs and custom themes open in the workspace.
No app blocks or embeds.Review, upsell, and loyalty widgets cannot be placed in a Canvas theme yet.
No Markets or translations. One design for every region, with the Translate & Adapt app handling language.
No manual block adds.New blocks must be requested from Sidekick instead of added by hand.
No theme updates.A design edited in Canvas stops receiving developer updates.
No file downloads. You cannot pull the files of a Canvas-edited theme out.
Plan and permission gates.Canvas needs a plan that includes theme customization plus the edit-code staff permission.

Shopify told TechCrunch it plans to add the missing capabilities over time. App support was described as arriving within weeks in the developer community, according to the PageFly guide.

Canvas vs the theme editor vs AI store builders

Three paths to a storefront now sit side by side, and they serve different merchants.

PathHow you buildBest for
Theme editor.Drag sections and blocks inside a chosen theme.Every Theme Store theme, proven and app-friendly.
Shopify Canvas.Chat with Sidekick while real code renders live.New stores on Shopify-made designs that want an agent-built look.
AI store builder. One prompt generates the store, pages, and styling.Merchants starting from zero who want a conversion-ready layout fast.

We work in the third lane. Our AI Store Builder, currently in beta, generates a theme with pages, sections, and styling from a single prompt. We mapped the wider field in the best AI Shopify store builders and wrote the step-by-step route in how to build a Shopify store with AI.

The Shopify-native efforts matter to us because they set merchant expectations. Our Horizon AI features guide covers the free theme family that has shipped AI block generation since May 2025.

What Shopify Canvas means if you use a third-party theme

Most paid themes in the Theme Store come from independent developers, which puts a large share of merchants outside Canvas at launch. A Shopify staff post on the developer community forum, dated October 1, 2026, says full backwards compatibility with outside themes is not there yet. The team is working toward compatibility before Canvas becomes the default editor, and the Theme Store remains an important destination while its role in this new world is being considered (community.shopify.dev, checked October 22, 2026).

The practical advice is boring and useful. If your store runs an outside theme with app blocks, do not migrate now. A Canvas-edited copy stops receiving updates and cannot host app blocks at launch, so your reviews and upsells would vanish from the design.

Keep your current theme maintained, watch the rollout, and test app support before switching. If you are launching fresh on a Shopify-made design, duplicate it and try the workspace on the copy. If you are starting from zero, our free Shopify store guide walks through the full setup path.

Frequently asked questions about Shopify Canvas

Is Shopify Canvas a separate paid product?

No separate price was announced. Canvas requires a Shopify plan that includes theme customization, and staff members need the edit-code permission to open it.

Does Shopify Canvas work with any theme?

Not at launch. It supports themes that Shopify builds itself, plus custom themes. Compatibility with outside themes is planned before Canvas becomes the default editor, according to the Shopify community post.

Does Canvas replace the theme editor?

Not yet. Ben Sehl said the team is early and that Canvas is not replacing the existing editor. Both paths coexist for now.

Can my apps work inside Canvas?

Not at launch. App blocks and app embeds cannot be added or configured in a Canvas theme, and Shopify told app developers that support is coming soon, per the PageFly guide.

Verdict: a promising surface that is still early

Canvas shows where store design is heading, with an agent in the loop and the whole storefront visible at once. The launch gaps, especially outside themes, app blocks, Markets, and theme updates, are exactly what established stores depend on today.

We ship themes for a living and we run an agentic builder of our own, so our read is simple. Try the new surface on a scratch store if you are curious, and keep your production store on a maintained theme until compatibility lands.

Merchants who want the AI path today, without waiting, can generate a store with our builder or compare the top Shopify themes for 2026 first.
