Shopify Sidekick Explained: What the AI Assistant Can Do in 2026

Sidekick works in two modes. You can chat with it to ask questions and run tasks, or it can surface recommendations on its own through Sidekick Pulse on the admin home. The Help Center frames it as a tool that works within the context of your store regardless of technical skill.

That context awareness is the difference from a general chatbot. Sidekick reads your products, orders, and settings, so an answer about returns last quarter comes from your data rather than from generic advice.

The capability list below draws on the Help Center plus a June 2026 capability review by PageFly and a September 2026 rundown of admin actions (pagefly.io, checked October 22, 2026).

• Analytics in plain language: it writes ShopifyQL queries and builds charts across sales, payments, fulfillment, and payout data.
• Admin actions with approval: it fills the forms that create products, discounts, customers, and campaigns, then waits for your save.
• Content drafts: product descriptions, blog posts, emails, and up to five generated images per prompt.
• Theme edits: moving, hiding, or removing sections and blocks, plus global settings like typography and color.
• Segments and discounts: building customer segments and promotional codes from a description.
• Order work: finding, editing, and drafting orders without menu diving.

The approval step is deliberate. Sidekick proposes and you dispose, which keeps a human signature on anything customer-facing.

Three releases reshaped the assistant this year, and the timeline explains why older articles undersell it.

The assistant is powerful and bounded. These limits matter before you reorganize work around it.

• It cannot run your store unattended, because every admin change still needs your approval by design.
• It cannot replace app functionality that lacks an extension yet, since the App Extensions program launched with a limited partner set.
• It cannot edit themes outside the supported settings surface, which is where deeper layout work still lives in the editor or in code.
• It cannot guarantee analytical correctness on messy data, so unusual bookkeeping still deserves a human read.
