Shopify October 2026 Updates: What Changed and What to Do Before Black Friday

Shopify shipped 18 verified changes between 1 and 23 October 2026. The ones that matter most before Black Friday: discount testing in Rollouts, the new Canvas designer (with big caveats), Sidekick in the checkout editor, compare-at prices shared with AI agents, and automatic tax on US return shipping fees.
Shopify spreads its news across two changelogs, a newsroom, and help docs, so monthly changes are easy to miss. This roundup pulls together every merchant-facing change we could verify from 1 to 23 October, groups them by what they touch, and ends with the platform dates you need between now and March 2027.

Three changes to act on before Black Friday
Discounts in Rollouts (2 October)
Rollouts, Shopify's tool for scheduling and testing store changes, now includes discounts. You can show a new offer to part of your traffic, compare it with your current offers on conversion, and launch it together with a theme change. Rollouts need the Basic plan or higher, and experiments that compare offers need the Grow plan or higher. The practical move: test two Black Friday offer structures in early November so the winner is proven before the rush. Our BFCM sales automation guide covers the flows around it.
Canvas (1 October)
Canvas puts every page of your store on one zoomable workspace where you edit by clicking or by asking Sidekick. It is early access, desktop only, and Shopify says it "is not replacing the existing editor yet". The launch gaps matter for theme buyers: Canvas does not support third-party themes from the Shopify Theme Store, Markets, rollouts, translations, or app blocks and app embeds, and themes edited in Canvas do not receive theme updates. The advice: experiment with Canvas on a duplicate theme and keep your live store on the normal editor until app support arrives. Our Canvas explainer has the full breakdown.
Sidekick in the checkout and accounts editor (13 October)
Shopify's AI assistant now works inside the desktop checkout and accounts editor. It explains settings, recommends apps, and inside the Checkout Blocks app it can help plan blocks and functions for the checkout, thank you, and order status pages. If you have been postponing checkout tweaks, this lowers the barrier. Our Sidekick explainer covers the full capability list.
Checkout, shipping, and payments
- Carts synced across devices through Shop (5 October): Shop recognizes a shopper before purchase, enabling faster checkout, carts that follow between devices, one-tap account sign-in, and abandoned cart reminders sent by Shop. Nothing to switch on, but check how Shop's reminders overlap with your own abandoned checkout emails.
- Royal Mail pickup points (15 October, UK): turn on under Settings, Shipping and delivery, Pickup points, then choose a UK location, enable ship to pickup points, and add Royal Mail to the rate. A quick win before the December rush if you already ship with Royal Mail.
- DHL eCommerce labels (16 October): Dutch stores can buy discounted domestic labels, and Polish stores can buy labels for orders to other EU countries, with no fee on top of the plan.
- Pay foreign suppliers from Balance (6 October, US): pay international recipients from the Shopify Balance mobile app. No fee figures are published, so compare the quoted rate with your bank first.
- Tax on return shipping fees (23 October, US): return shipping fees are now taxed automatically like any other shipping charge for US orders on Shopify Tax or Tax Platform, following each state's shipping tax rules. If a spreadsheet or app was adding that tax by hand, review your setup now to avoid counting the tax twice.
- Batch fulfillment (16 October): fulfill orders in batches of up to 250, grouped by product type or destination, with a pick, print, and pack flow that includes scan verification. It needs an active location you manage yourself in a country where Shopify sells labels; a location run by a fulfillment service does not count.
- Shopify Flow buys shipping labels (15 October): a new Flow action purchases labels automatically when an order matches your conditions, for example single-item orders or a tag.
AI channels: your catalog now talks to agents
Two updates change how your products appear to AI shopping agents. From 9 October, Shopify Catalog shares compare-at prices with agentic channels; a toggle in the catalog mapping settings turns it off. Before Black Friday, check that those "was" prices are real. In the EU, the Price Indication Directive (Article 6a) requires a discounted price's "was" figure to be the lowest price you charged in the prior 30 days, and agents now repeat whatever you set.
From 13 October, Shop MCP lets AI agents search Shopify Catalog, build a cart, and pay with Shop Pay, and agent orders appear in your admin like any other order. For the merchant-side readiness checklist covering feeds, product cards, speed, and trust, read the companion post: AI holiday shoppers are coming, and here is how to get ready.
Admin, languages, and POS
- Analytics notes (1 October): annotate reports so a spike still makes sense three months later.
- Purchase order reports (6 October): analyze purchase orders inside Analytics.
- Automated store policies (8 October): Shopify can write and maintain your return, shipping, terms of service, and contact policies from your settings. You remain responsible for their accuracy, so read what it generates before publishing.
- Right-to-left languages (2 October): improved Arabic, Urdu, and Hebrew support across the admin, checkout, customer accounts, and the free Horizon themes.
- Translate & Adapt auto-sync (9 October): merchants in 12 European countries can let Shopify re-translate new and changed content weekly, now for up to 8 languages instead of 2. Auto-sync is off by default, and hand-written translations are never overwritten.
- POS smart grid suggestions (12 October): POS suggests tiles for the products and discounts staff use most, and may suggest removing tiles unused for a year. Nothing changes until you accept and save.
- Buyer-requested order edits (developer changelog): new APIs let a buyer request removal of unfulfilled items, with apps reviewing, resolving, or declining the requests.
Platform dates to know through March 2027

| 27 to 30 Nov 2026 | Black Friday through Cyber Monday | Follow a week-by-week prep plan |

| 1 Mar 2027 | Script tags stop loading on storefronts | Ask each app developer whether they still use script tags |
Frequently asked questions
Did Shopify replace the theme editor with Canvas?
No. Shopify says Canvas "is not replacing the existing editor yet". It is early access, desktop only, and it does not support third-party themes from the Theme Store, Markets, rollouts, translations, or app blocks and embeds. Themes edited in Canvas do not receive theme updates.
What is the 23 October return shipping tax change?
For US orders on Shopify Tax or Tax Platform, return shipping fees are now taxed automatically like any other shipping charge, following each state's shipping tax rules. If you added that tax manually before, review your setup to avoid taxing it twice.
Can I A/B test Black Friday discounts natively in Shopify?
Yes. Since 2 October, Rollouts includes discounts: show an offer to part of your traffic and compare conversion. Scheduling needs the Basic plan or higher, and experiments that compare offers need the Grow plan or higher.
Do AI shopping agents see my sale prices?
Since 9 October, Shopify Catalog shares compare-at prices with agentic channels. The toggle sits in the catalog mapping settings. In the EU, a "was" price must be the lowest price you charged in the prior 30 days.
Does batch fulfillment work with third-party logistics locations?
No. Batch fulfillment requires an active location you manage yourself in a country where Shopify sells shipping labels. A location run by a fulfillment service does not count.
A quiet month with a loud checklist
October brought no single dramatic launch; it brought 18 small shifts that compound by Black Friday. Test your offers in Rollouts, keep Canvas on a duplicate theme, verify your compare-at prices, and review your return tax setup. Do those four things and the rest of the month is bonus. For the AI side of the season, continue with the AI holiday readiness checklist, and if you are evaluating design tools, the Canvas explainer and Sidekick explainer go deeper.
